”Īddressing the factors considered by the Prosecution, Mr Shanmugam said, “In assessing the charges to proceed on and to take into consideration in a plea of guilt, factors which are generally taken into account by the AGC include the strength of the Prosecution’s case, the accused person’s level of co-operation with the investigation authorities and any relevant personal mitigating circumstances.” “It was the AGC which decided to prefer charges against Mr Karl in the first place, and they carefully considered the facts. He also clarified that the Attorney-General had recused himself from the case. He added that the charge was in fact taken into consideration for the purposes of sentencing. “It gives the impression that the charge was not before the Court or was otherwise withdrawn, ” The Minister clarified that the statement that the Prosecution did not press charges under section 177 of the Penal Code against Mr Karl is inaccurate. Mr Shanmugam emphasized that the case was dealt with in a standard manner and that there was nothing exceptional about it. S193 carries a maximum imprisonment term of seven years, and shall also be liable to a fine while s182 carries a prescribed penalty of imprisonment, which may extend to one year, a fine of up to $5,000, or both. “The other charge against him under section 177 of the Penal Code for giving false information to the Police was taken into consideration for the purposes of sentencing.” Karl eventually pleaded guilty in March 2023 to an amended charge under section 182 of the Penal Code for giving a false statement in Court (instead of under section 193 of the Penal Code).” “These charges were for furnishing false information to the Police and giving false evidence in judicial proceedings, respectively. Mr Shanmugam stated, “In November 2020, the Prosecution preferred two charges against Karl under sections 177 and 193 of the Penal Code.” Ms Poa had asked for the reasons for not pressing charges against Karl under section 177 of the Penal Code for furnishing false information to a public servant and section 193 of the Penal Code for giving false evidence, as announced by the Police on 4 November 2020 and whether he will ask the Attorney-General to make the reasons public. On 14 April, Karl was sentenced to two weeks of imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to an offence under section 182 of the Penal Code for having told DJ Low that two pieces of clothing (a cream polo ladies t-shirt and a red blouse) belonged to him when he knew that information was false. This was said by Mr K Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Law, in response to a parliamentary question filed by Non-Constituency Member of Parliament Ms Hazel Poa, over concerns regarding the charges against Karl Liew Kai Lung, son of former Changi Airport Group chairman Liew Mun Leong, in the case of migrant domestic worker Parti Liyani. “This is regularly done in fact, it is the norm in cases involving a plea of guilt.” “It is normal for the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) to proceed on amended charges”, as well as to take other charges into consideration for the purposes of sentencing when an individual elects to plead guilty.”

Hayden’s decision to delay the release of that information-the identification of the poem’s speaker-as well as his deployment of the conditional sentence as the poem opens, allows the poem, temporally, to be positioned in the past, present, and future at once. The title initially suggests that perhaps “Fredrick Douglass” is a persona poem, which could certainly be reinforced by the poem’s opening line: “When it is finally ours, this freedom, this liberty…” However, reading on, we discover at line seven that, “this man, this Douglass, this former slave, this Negro,” this speaker is, in fact, not Douglass but some other contemporary, quite likely Hayden himself. Hayden’s concern is the course of history itself-what our country has promised, and how those promises have yet to be fully realized.įrom its very title and onward, “Fredrick Douglass” establishes and subverts its reader’s expectations. It is a poem that, through Hayden’s careful and deliberate craft decisions, enacts another waiting, the poem about much more than Douglass the individual. “But some of us are aware of it as a long, tortuous, and often bloody process of becoming.” Hayden’s 1947 poem “Frederick Douglass,” like so much of his work, is haunted by the ghosts of said “bloody process,” Fredrick Douglass himself among them. “The past is for most Americans, unfortunately, rather meaningless,” the poet Robert Hayden said in 1976. Waiting for a student to return an email. I am waiting for water to boil to steep a sachet of tea. Here I am, ruminating on the poetics of home in the African American Diaspora, and there are those who, across the country, have been unemployed for months, whose homes are in jeopardy, who need-are waiting for-relief, though hardly the kind of relief a reader experiences after the final lines of a poem. And there is so much to make sense of-with the nation reeling from the impact of a global pandemic, our national death toll rising, a dearth of responsible federal leadership or direction, and a country divided over the legacy of its own brutal past. They help us make sense of the world and how to emotionally orient and navigate ourselves within. It is during times of uncertainty and fear that one, such as myself, might turn to poetry, which Robert Frost has famous described as “a momentary stay against confusion.” Poems reveal the world to us, or reveal ourselves in the world they guide us toward surprise, discovery, and in the best cases, wisdom, delight. I am waiting, as we have begun trying, to find out if my wife is pregnant, and if so, how that might be affected by word of who will be elected to the executive branch for the next four years. I am waiting on the results of the Coronavirus test I took on campus less than 36 hours ago. I am waiting for word as to who will be elected to the executive branch for the next four years as well as who will serve in Congress. In the deep dark of night, I am watching the electoral map take on weightier shades of blue and red. Which is to say, I, much like the country at large, am waiting. It is two days after the presidential election as I sit at my desk and turn my attention to this essay. This Beautiful, Needful Thing: On the Poetics of Home in the African American Diaspora All your baseīut that isn’t where the problems with Kingdom Under Fire 2 ‘s business model switch stop. Astoundingly, though, that’s still not enough, and it remains to be seen what will be done to alleviate this. Recently, they’ve put in place a 50% gold boost for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, it still wasn’t nearly enough and players let the publisher show. The most recent update last month greatly increased the amount of gold that players received from daily quests. Players are often finding themselves broke without a way to make good money, as the game’s original design wasn’t worked out with a buy-to-play business model in mind. But, most importantly, it’s used to level and rank up your troops. You use it to craft new items, purchase others from the auction house, and repair your equipment. Gold is understandably one of the game’s most important resources. But the amount of gold hasn’t been properly adjusted yet. As the free game was mostly based around a monumental grind, it was obvious that wasn’t going to work here. The gold problemīut gold has been one of Kingdom Under Fire 2 ‘s biggest problems since this incarnation launched. Turn five in to the proper NPC and you’ll get a chest with a random, yet sizable amount of gold within. Plus, each mission gives players a certificate. Then there are the five mission quests that take a lot more effort yet have much better rewards. They take very little time and offer slight rewards. There are five quests players can do in the game’s main city of Accolade which are identical every day. Kingdom Under Fire 2 gives players cubits for completing two sets of daily quests.
